Optimization and Application of Anti-Deflect and Fast Drilling BHA with a PDC Bit in the Linpan Oilfield

  • Dominated by frequently alternating soft and hard formations, the Linpan Oilfield is characterized by problems related to deflections in straight vertical wells and low drilling efficiencies. In order to use a PDC bit to solve the problem of well deflection and enhance the ROP, the rock-bit interaction model has been used to design anti-deflection bottom-hole assemblies (BHAs) suitable for PDC bits. In addition, the influence rules of drilling tendency relative to the position of the stabilizer and the weight-on-bit (WOB) have been analyzed and put into use at drilling sites. Anti-deflection BHAs and drilling parameters suitable for PDC bits in the Linpan Oilfield have been designed and optimized with WOB of 50-70 kN and bit rotation speed of no less than 100 r/min. Field applications suggested that newly designed anti-deflection BHAs are suitable for PDC bits and can control well deflection better, drill faster, minimize tripping operations and reduce drilling costs. All research conclusions have shown that the newly designed BHAs suitable for PDC bits can satisfy the anti-deflection requirements with higher ROPs in the Linpan Oilfield.
